Vine and Wine Workshop
Held
on 5 Nov. 2004; Silverdale, WA
Those interested in starting a vineyard and making wines in western Washington joined the special "short course" sponsored by Washington State University Kitsap County Extension. The workshop was the first joint presentation by two new WSU Extension specialists hired to serve the needs of Washington producers from vine to wine.
WSU Extension viticulturist Mercy Olmstead covered the basics of vineyard management, including selecting the right site, choosing planting stock, using canopies and trellises, and estimating crop yields. WSU Extension enologist James Harbertson offered information on harvest decisions, fermentation, and differences in wine styles, as well as principles of aging and clarification. Gary Moulton gave a presentation on the WSU Wine Grape Project.
The short course was held on Friday, November 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Island Lake Community Center just north of Silverdale.
