| Welcome
to Sherwood Demonstration Forest!
The
Sherwood Demonstration Forest was established in the spring of 1999
as part of a coordinated effort between Washington State University Extension, the U.S. Forest Service, Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Williamson Consulting.. It is located 7 miles southeast of Chewelah, Washington in Stevens County. The site provides an educational opportunity
for school groups, non-industrial private forest landowners, loggers
and other interested parties to view the crucial role management
plays in maintaining a healthy and productive forest. The 60-acre
demonstration area is located on private land donated by the Playfair
family, and is bordered by other private, state trust, and national
forest jurisdictions.
The
Sherwood Creek Demonstration Forest is divided into five general
management blocks. Within the core project area lie seven main demonstration
plots contrasting different forest treatments. The acreage showcases
several distinct forest management systems, from a no-cut control
to a clear-cut stand. One plot is left untouched as a control plot
to demonstrate the area's structure prior to the implementation
of the harvest treatments. Surrounding the seven demonstration plots
are forest blocks demonstrating past and present harvest treatments,
which illustrate the challenges of managing forests sustainably.
The
different harvesting methods demonstrate specific forest values,
which include wildlife habitat, soil and water resources, recreation,
aesthetics, and timber production. The main purpose of the demonstration
project is to show the benefits and consequences of different harvest
methods using on-the-ground, visual examples.
The Sherwood Creek Demonstration Forest is on private property and must be used with permission. Please contact WSU Stevens County Extension at 509-684-3588 for scheduling and use information.
